One of the main platforms to use when it comes to how to add ads to your website is  Google AdSense. It consists of an advertising program created by Google where clients pay to promote their ads on different websites.

Blogs and website owners have the opportunity to gain money by putting those advertisements on their pages, but without having to worry about choosing the ads or finding companies interested in their space.

Google takes care of everything, it selects the ads that are going to be displayed according to the audience and site content.

How Does Google AdSense Work?

Before Google approves that your website complies with its policies and you create your account, you have the option to choose the types of ads you want to have on your website, and where they are going to appear, at the top of the page, on the sides, or in the bottom, for instance.

Google will define which ads should be put on your website according to your Ad Rank, which is determined by the cost per click bid and your quality score. Your quality score is analyzed considering keyword click-through rate.

After the ads are placed on your page, you will get based on the bid types of the ads displayed, which can be: cost per click (CPC), cost per thousand impressions (CPM), Active view CPM, and cost per engagement (CPE). You are going to be paid monthly for the ads.

Steps to Insert Ads into Your Website

1. Check if your Website follows Google AdSense Requirements

To add ads to your website using Google AdSense, you need to be in compliance with the the platform's  elegibility requirements , which include:

  • Have your own unique content;
  • Don't publish illegal content;
  • Don't infringe copyrights;
  • Don't contain malware or adware.

Websites that contain adult content, sell anything related to drugs, alcohol, tobacco, weapons, ammunition, or display hateful content can't be publishers at Google AdSense either.

2. Sign Up for Google AdSense

Once you have checked your website following Google AdSense policies, it's time to create your account. Go to the platform, click on "Get started", and begin the application process. If you have a Gmail account or use any other Google service, you already own an account.

What you will need to do is to fulfill the information required, including your phone number and mailing address associated with your bank account, to be able to receive payment. Then, just connect your website to Google AdSense by putting a piece of code that will be given to you.

To know how to insert the code, if you use a Website builder like WordPress, usually they provide a guide on how to do it, so there are no mistakes. It's simpler than it seems, it doesn't take being an expert on coding to complete the task, no worries.

3. Select the Types of Ads You Wish to Display

With your Google AdSense account all set up, you will need to wait for Google to approve your application, and review your information. It can take between 2 to 4 weeks, but you will be notified when your account is activated.

Now you can configure the type of ads you desire to put on your website. To do that, enter your account, click on "Ads", on the right side menu, then, click on "By ad unit".

On this page, you will be able to see multiple ad formats such as "Display ads", "In-feed ads", and "In-article ads". On Google AdSense's page, you can check these ads' characteristics to understand which ones fit your website better.

After selecting the ad type, you can set the size, style, if it's going to be fixed or responsive, and other details. Google will give you recommendations based on the most popular ad sizes if you are in doubt.

4. Put the Ad on the Page

Once the ad is completely configured, all you have to do is click on "create", and it will give you the HTML code of the ad. Copy it, and access your website to paste the code on the page it's going to be displayed.

The process to position the ad on the page depends on the website builder or CMS you are using. For example, in WordPress websites, it's possible to use a widget to drag the ad to where you wish it to be shown. Before finalizing the page edition, check if the ad is placed correctly, then publish it.

To decide where to put the ads, consider the heatmaps of your pages to know the areas that are more likely to catch the audience's attention, therefore, increasing the chances of the ads being clicked.

5. Use the Auto-Ads Code

If you don't want to have to work on selecting ad types, another possibility is to opt for the auto-ads code. Click on "Ads", then, "By site", and, finally, on "get code". After it, copy the code snippet and add it to your website pages.

Google will figure out for you the best size, location, and type of the ad to be placed. The disadvantage is that you won't have control over where the ad will be displayed on each page, but, on the other hand, it saves you time.

6. Invest in Conquering Organic Traffic

If it does, and all your payment information is placed correctly, the payment is going to be issued between the 21st and 26th of the month. If you haven't reached the threshold, your earnings will accumulate until it does.
